How Do I Know If I Have Rats Or Mice?

A rodent infestation can sneak up on you if you’re not paying attention. Before you know it, you can have multiple rats and mice scurrying throughout the home. Once they’re there, it can be a bit difficult to get them out.

Do you know the telltale signs of a rodent infestation? If not, here are a few things to look out for.

Droppings. Droppings are often the number 1 sign of a rodent infestation. Mouse droppings are less than ¼ inch in length, and have pointed ends.  Rat droppings are ½ and ¾ of an inch long, and have various shapes. The location of the droppings indicate areas of the home where you should lay traps.

Holes. Sometimes rodents will gnaw holes through walls. Remember that rodents can squeeze through the tiniest of holes, and they use these holes as entry points to move around the home.

Noises. If you hear abnormal noises at night, it could be a sign of an infestation. Rodents are nocturnal, so if you hear scratches, screeches, and hurried movements, it could indicate a bad infestation.

Nests. Mice will shred paper, string, and general garbage to create their nests indoors. This is why it’s crucial to sweep the floors, remove the garbage and keep things clean.

Odors. A distinctive, musky odor often accompanies an infestation. Also, if a rodent has died in the home, you’ll surely smell the rancid, rotting odor as its body decomposes.
